Wrestlers upset No. 7 Wabasso/RRC

The New Prague Trojan wrestling team split a pair of matches against state-ranked opponents last week. The team travelled to Hector to face Hutchinson/Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart (No. 8, Class AA) and Wabasso/Red Rock Central (No. 7 AA).

The Trojans lost the opening match to Wright County Conference opponent Hutchinson, but recovered to upset Wabasso in the second match.

On Saturday the Trojans had an invitational meet at Orono and placed sixth of 16 teams.

The Trojans will host their final meet of the regular season Thursday, Feb. 2, facing Foley (No. 4, Class AA) and Orono beginning at 5 p.m. in the Trojan gym. This will be senior night, and Trojan senior wrestlers, managers and cheerleaders will be honored prior to the final match between Orono and New Prague, which will start about 7:30 p.m.

Tigers 38, Trojans 27 "We had our chances, losing a couple of very close individual matches," Trojan Coach Dan Wagner said. New Prague had a slow start, losing the first four matches to fall behind 18-0. Max Scheffler got New Prague’s first win at 132 pounds with a fall in 50 seconds.

Also winning were Trevor Skogerboe (145) by forfeit; Gaige Giles (152) with a fall in nine seconds, Nick Arguedas (160) with a decision, and Tony Wacker (285) with a fall.

Trojans 39, Rabbits 27 In contrast to the first match, the Trojans started strong against Wabasso/Red Rock Central and jumped to a 27-0 lead. Colby Dunkel (103) got things started with a decision and Taylor Woodyard (113) won by forfeit. Alex Scheffler (120) won by fall, as did Carter Bornholdt (126) and Max Scheffler (132).

The Rabbits won the next two matches before Giles (152) scored a fall. Arguedas (160) earned a decision and Tyler Montanye (182) also scored a decision.

Orono Invitational New Prague had 10 entries in the Orono Invitational and six wrestlers placed in the top six as the Trojans finished sixth in the tourney. Anoka won the championship and St. Cloud Tech was second.

The Trojans had two second place finishers, with Colby Dunkel winning two of three matches at 103 pounds and Nick Arguedas winning three of four, all by fall, at 160 pounds.
