Wrestlers win 2AA team title

The No. 1 seed New Prague Trojans survived a scare from Hutchinson in the semifinals, taking a 32-30 win, then rolled over No. 2 seed Watertown-Mayer 43-17 to claim the Section 2AA team wrestling championship Saturday, Feb. 16, in Watertown. 

New Prague needed to avoid a pin in the final match against Hutchinson, and Zach Lafavor stayed off his back in losing a major decision to allow the Trojans to advance to the finals. 

Once they got to the championship match they left no doubt. With the score tied 8-8 The Trojans' Darick Kvam upset No. 9-ranked Aaron Sweeney 7-4 at 132 pounds and got his team rolling. The Trojans won six straight matches to take a commanding 31-8 lead. And when they finally lost, in a close decision at 185 pounds, the Trojans clinched the championship by having a 20-point lead with three matches remaining. 

New Prague will compete in the state Class AA team tournament on Thursday, Feb. 28, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Team pairings will be announced Tuesday, Feb. 19. Meanwhile the Trojans will concentrate on qualifying individuals for the state tournament when they compete in the Section 2AA individual tournament Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22 and 23 at Waconia.
