Wrestlers win 3 of 4 matches at home

The New Prague Trojan wrestling team wrestled four matches at home last week, and won three of them.

On Tuesday they hosted Mankato East in a dual meet and after wrestling to a 33-33 tie, the Trojans were declared winner on the sixth tie-breaking criteria. They hosted a quadrangular meet with Northfield, Lakeville North and Le Sueur-Henderson on Friday and won two of three, losing only to Section 2AA rival Le Sueur-Henderson.

The Trojans will host Farmington Friday in a Seniors’ Night match, then on Saturday they compete in the Rosemount Invitational, starting at 9 a.m. On Thursday, Feb. 2, they wrestle at Hutchinson.

Trojans 33, Cougars 33

Mankato East jumped to an 18-0 lead by winning the first four matches, and the Trojans were playing catch-up from there. Shane Nelson got the Trojans started with a pin at 130 pounds. Casey Pendergast did the same at 135 and Travis Rutt earned a 6-4 decision at 140 pounds, to get the Trojans to within three.

After a pin at 145 for East, Eric Olson scored a decision at 152 pounds, and his brother, Kevin, scored a pin at 160 to tie the match at 24-24.

New Prague took the lead with a Caleb Lines’ decision at 171, but the Cougars got a come-from-behind win at 189 to tie it. Jake Schoenecker scored a pin for New Prague at 215, but the Cougars scored another come-from-behind win, this time with a pin at 275, resulting in a 33-33 score.

After meet officials went over the various tie-breaking criteria, New Prague was declared the winner.

Trojans 49, Raiders 21

The Trojans evened their Missota Conference record at 1-1 with a win over Northfield in the opening match of a triangular.

The Trojans trailed 3-0, but Jesse Cole scored a pin at 112 to make it 6-3 New Prague. It was 9-6 Northfield when Nelson took a 4-2 decision at 130. Rutt won by forfeit at 135 and Aaron Becker scored an 18-4 major decision at 140. After a Raider pin, the Trojans won the next five matches, all by pin. Winning were Eric Olson (152), Zack Flicek (160), Kevin Olson (171), Lines (189) and Schoenecker (215). That made the score 49-15. Northfield won the final match by forfeit.

Giants 27, Trojans 24

New Prague could not come back from an early deficit, as the Giants matched up well with the Trojans’ heavier weights and outlasted New Prague by a 27-24 score.

Trailing 6-0, Erick Pendergast got a decision at 112 for the Trojans. LSH scored a decision at 119, but David Doran got three points back for New Prague with a 10-4 win at 125. Nelson scored an 8-5 decision at 130, to tie it at 9-9. LSH got a decision to go up 12-9, then the Giants forfeited to Rutt and trailed 15-12.

LSH took the next two wins, with a pin at 145 and a decision at 152. Zack Flicek got the Trojans back to within three with a decision at 160, and Kevin Olson scored a 7-4 win at 171 to tie the match at 21-21.

But two of the Trojans’ best wrestlers, Lines and Schoenecker, went up against two of the Giants’ best, and LSH won both matches by decision, making it 27-21. The Trojans needed a pin at 275, but Arens scored a decision and the Giants prevailed 27-24.

LSH also defeated Northfield and Lakeville North to win the quadrangular.

New Prague had little problem with Lakeville North in the third match of the night, winning 49-17.
