Wrestlers win medals; girls head to finals; boys play Wednesday

Two New Prague High School wrestlers came home with bronze medals from the Minnesota State High School Class AA Wrestling Tournament this past weekend.

Sophomore Travis Rutt lost his second round match to Samuel Schad of Long Prairie-Grey Eagle, but then won four straight matches, including a 5-4 decision over Troy Biermeyer of Little Falls, to take third place. Rutt finishes his season with a 44-4 record.

Senior Jake Schoenecker lost in the semifinals 15-6 to Cody Reverts of Adrian on Friday, but won two matches Saturday, including a 9-5 decision over Allen Lutterman of Minnewaska Area, to take third. Schoenecker finished the season with a 30-7 record.

Two other wrestlers—senior Eric Olson and sophomore Caleb Lines—also competed for the Trojans.

Trojan girls head to section finals

New Prague High School’s girls basketball team defeated Albert Lea 67-58 in the Section 1AAA semifinals Saturday at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester. The Trojans advance to the section championship game at 8:15 p.m. Friday in Rochester against Missota Conference rival Northfield. The Raiders, seeded No. 5, defeated No. 8 seed Lakeville South in the other semifinal.

Trojan boys to host Albert Lea in playoff opener Wednesday

New Prague High School’s boys basketball team will begin Section 1AAA play at 7 p.m. Wednesday, when they host Albert Lea. New Prague was seeded No. 4 and Albert Lea No. 5. Other games on Wednesday have No. 6 Northfield at No. 3 Waseca, No. 7 Austin at No. 2 Lakeville South, and either No. 8 Faribault or No. 9 Red Wing at No. 1 Winona. Semifinal games are Saturday evening at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester.
