Wrestling team takes 4th at state
The New Prague High School wrestling team lived up to its ranking at the Minnesota State High School Class AA State Team Tournament Thursday, Feb. 28.
The Trojans were ranked No. 4 in Class AA and were seeded fourth by the coaches. They ended up placing fourth in the eight-team tournament.
New Prague defeated Adrian in the first round, 32-19, then lost to eventual champion Kasson-Mantorville 37-18 and to Foley 33-24.
“We were up against some of the best teams in the state,” coach Greg Tikalsky said. “And in the case of Kasson-Mantorville, one of the best in the country. We saw our kids rise to the level of competition.”
Trojans 32, Dragons 19 New Prague opened the tournament against Adrian, which was the No. 5 seed in the tournament. The teams split the first six matches and were tied 10-10 when senior Morgan Parriott started a run of four straight wins that put the Trojans in command, 22- 10. The Dragons won the next two, one by fall, to close to within three at 22-19, but Nathan Preston clinched the match for New Prague with a fall in 35 seconds at 220 pounds.
“We had a couple of nice wins along the way. They bumped up a state entrant from 106 pounds to face Nick Knutson at 113 and Nick beat him. That was big,” Tikalsky said.
He said Joe Heinz did a Granby roll and went on the attack to get the advantage and win a 5-2 decision at 160 pounds against a state entrant.

KoMets 37, Trojans 18 New Prague once again got four straight wins in the middle of its lineup against Kasson- Mantorville, but a slow start meant that they only were able to close to within six before the KoMets pulled away for a 37-18 win in the semifinals.
Kasson-Mantorville led 20- 3 after six matches, with Griffin Parriott at 120 pounds getting the only Trojan win early. Then Morgan Parriott, Heintz, Reinartz and Giles all took decisions as the Trojans close the gap to 20-17.
However the KoMets have a loaded lineup, and it showed as they dominated three of the final four matches, taking two falls and a technical fall to win 37-18.
“We actually won six of the 14 matches against Kasson,” Tikalsky said. “Not many teams have done that this year. I would have liked to have gotten more bonus points, though... all wins were by decision.
“All year we have been winning by getting bonus points and not giving up bonus points. That didn’t happen against Kasson.”

Falcons 33, Trojans 24 New Prague jumped to an early lead by winning two of three matches, but Foley won three straight and eventually stretched its lead to 25-12 before the Trojans won three of the last five and had a chance right down to the final match before losing to Foley 33-24.
Nick Knutson and Logan Giles both had big pins for New Prague and Cody Sirek had an exciting overtime win at 195 pounds.
“We had a couple of close matches, but things just didn’t go our way,” Tikalsky said. “A couple of our guys were on top for most of the match, but they were a good defensive team and we just couldn’t seem to turn them on their back.
