Bucs split two Gopher Conference games

The WEM girls basketball team took one step forward and one step back in the Gopher Conference standings last week.

The Bucs defeated Maple River, 61-52, Tuesday, Jan. 17, avenging an earlier loss to the second place Eagles. With that win WEM moved into a tie with Maple River in the West Division. Three nights later, Kenyon-Wanamingo (K-W) used some outstanding outside shooting to knock off the Bucs, 55-49. The Knights made 6-of-13 three-pointers while the Bucs made only four in 31 attempts.

WEM made the most of their opportunities against Maple River. They hit 21-of-30 free throws and shot a season-best 17-of-31 (55%) on two point attempts.They also held a 40-27 rebounding advantage.

“Our focus and intent on the defensive end was really good all night, and we once again did a good job of rebounding the ball,” head coach Ty Kaus said. “It was a really nice effort and good win against a good team. Always nice to get one back after they beat us to begin the season.”
