Dress code and phy ed discussed at WEM Board meeting

Two issues were brought forth to the WEM Board of Education Monday, June 27 by district residents concerning possible changes in the 5th and 6th grade physical education schedule and the student dress code.

The physical education change which has been discussed in changing the five day, 25 minute phy ed classes to two 50 minute classes during the week. This would allow for students to also have a 50 minute Art, Music, and Media class once a week.

WEM Principal Bobbie Jo Bastian said it is a scheduling challenge with the high school which has put this change into the discussion phase. She did say students still have a 30 minute lunch and 30 minute recess each day.

Beth Clinton said it is important to have this (phy ed) healthy interaction. “They need this daily routine,” she said. “Please don’t cut it short.”

Discussion and possible decision on the 5th and 6th grade physical education classes will be during the regular July 25 board meeting.

The student dress and appearance policy was also discussed after the WEM Policy Committee received some comments from teachers about what they feel is inappropriate dress by students.
