Council filings open Aug. 3

The opening date for city council filings in New Prague, Elko New Market and Heidelberg begins next week, and already there are open seats in both New Prague and Elko New Market.
The filing period begins Tuesday, Aug. 3, and continues until Tuesday, Aug. 17. New Prague and Elko New Market have two council seats each, with no incumbents planning to run. Both cities also have a mayor's race on the ballot.
New Prague
In New Prague, council member Kay Wilcox has announced she will be stepping down after serving 20 years on the council. In addition, the seat held by Ken Betterton is open as Betterton has resigned and will not be running this fall. Betterton was appointed in 2009 to fill the term of Jennifer Flicek. His resignation followed an incident where he was arrested and cited for disorderly conduct (See separate story).
New Prague Mayor W.A. "Bink" Bender said he has not made a decision on whether he will run for another term in office. Current New Prague council member Kristin Guerrette has announced her candidacy for mayor. Elected in 2008 she is serving her first term on the council.
Those interested in filing can do so at the New Prague City Hall, 118 Central Ave N., from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (5 p.m. on August 17). There is a $5 filing fee.
Elko New Market
In Elko New Market, longtime council members Jim Friedges and Dennis Melgaard are stepping down. Both men have been involved with city government in various capacities for years and have served on the council since the merger of Elko and New Market in 2007.
Since 1966, Melgaard has served as Elko's mayor, on its planning commission and various other city boards and the Elko and Elko New Market city councils.
Friedges has served in various capacities since 1972, as New Market's mayor, city clerk and in other positions.
Elko New Market Mayor Jason Ponsonby has not decided on whether he will run for another term.
Those interested in filing can do so between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. (5 p.m. on Aug. 17) at the Elko New Market City Hall, 601 Main St. There is a $2 filing fee.
Heidelberg
Heidelberg will also be holding its city elections. There are three four-year council seats on this year's ballot.
Interested candidates should contact the city clerk at 507-364-7989 On or after August 3 and before 5 p.m. August 17 to make arrangements to file .
There is a $2 filing fee.
