American Legion Post #79’s Thank a Living Veteran Honoree - Stephen Peter Flicek -

Navy veteran Stephen “Steve” Peter Flicek is American Legion Post #79’s current honoree for their “Thank a Living Veteran” project.

Flicek is the eldest child of Glenn and Marge (Wacholtz) Flicek. He was born on November 16, 1948, in Minneapolis, where his parents lived while Glenn was enrolled at St. Thomas College.

The Flicek family moved to Montgomery in 1950, when Steve was two years old. He attended Most Holy Redeemer Catholic School (grades 1 through 8), then attended Montgomery High School where he participated in several sports, lettering seven times (3 baseball, 2 football, and 2 basketball). He also sang in the school choir and starred in the theatrical production of “Our Town” before graduating in 1966.

Flicek earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Accounting from St. Thomas College in St. Paul in 1970.

In June of 1970, he enlisted in the U. S. Naval Reserves, a six year commitment that included one year attending meetings at Fort Snelling Naval Base (1970-71), two years of active military duty (1971-73), two years of meetings at Fort Snelling Naval Station (1973-75), and a year of inactive military training (1975-76).

After two weeks of basic training at Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Illinois, Flicek had a two-week tour of duty at Norfolk Naval Station in Norfolk, Virginia. He was then sent to....
