Bun Run winner sets new record

Before Sunday’s 39th annual Bun Run 5K race, the all-time fastest finish was set by Brandon Kotek, formerly of Montgomery, last year. He finished with a time of 17:11.62.

This year, however a 22-year-old from St. Paul broke Kotek’s record by almost a minute. Tyler Sassenberg finished the race with a time of 16:25. Kotek also competed, but the 32-year-old finished in 18:07.

This wasn’t Sassenberg’s first time running the race. He also holds the all-time record fourth fastest record, one he set last year with a time of 17:20.

The first female to cross the finish line was Katherine Novak, also 22, of Champlin. She ended with the time of 20:17, setting a record as third fastest of all-time runners. Ahead of her on that record are Anne Ferguson, St. Paul. She ran a race of 19:53 in 2013. In second is Maria Berg, New Prague, who finished with a time of 20:09 in 2014.

The race had 141 runners registered. Runners aged from six to 76 years old.
