The Knights of Columbus debuted a new, larger hot dog stand last week.

Instead of the familiar seven-foot-by-seven-foot metal stand, residents ordered their brat or hot dog from a new larger building. According to “manager” Ernie Kotek, the solid eight-foot-by-ten-foot space gives volunteers more comfortable room to work.

Kotek and fellow KC member Nick Krautkremer brought up the idea to the KC Council in January to replace the aging and small food stand that sits at the corner of Vine Avenue and Second Street SW, by the Holy Redeemer School playground.

“The old one leaked,” Krautkremer said. “I think it was an old Pepsi stand when the KCs got it, so it was built probably in the 1970s.”

Kotek added, “We needed to retire it. We were always bumping into each other.”

In addition to more room, the new structure has glass board interior on the walls and a wooden floor, which make it easier to clean at the end of the day.

Tony Filipek put the stand together during the winter, with Bisek Interiors donating the flooring. R & R Metalworks installed the windows.

Kotek said the new hot dog stand, which cost the local KC $5,000, is still selling the brats made locally by Edel’s Meat Market with Shelterbelt beer from the Montgomery Brewing Company. The stand’s hours are Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
