Lonsdale native launches sports podcast at U of M Crookston

A University of Minnesota Crookston junior from Lonsdale, along with a classmate from Winnipeg, Canada, recently launched a sports podcast available on YouTube and Spotify.

Greg Johnson, the son of Wayne and Diane, played baseball for Tri-City United High School and graduated in 2016. Now double-majoring in marketing along with sports and recreation management and minoring in finance, Johnson hopes to land a career related to sports.

For now, Johnson records a weekly podcast, ”Calling an Audible,” with Zach Greenberg, a senior at U of M Crookston also majoring in sports and recreation management. The co-hosts applied for a Crookston Research for Creative Works grant and, thanks to their successful three-page proposal, earned a scholarship stipend to host the half-hour podcast for a broad platform.

Johnson originally became acquainted with Greenberg through their campus sports and recreation club.

“We had classes together and always saw each other,” said Johnson. “Once we found we had common interests, it just went from there.”

During the spring 2018 semester at U of M Crookston, Johnson and Greenberg both enrolled in a class called Writing in Your Profession. Their professor, Dani Johannesen, assigned a group project to the class and suggested Johnson, Greenberg, and two other collegiate athletes host a podcast focused on sports.

“[Johannesen] helped guide us through this entire process,” said Johnson. “She’s been more than happy to assist. Both Zach and I are grateful for her idea on this.”
