Montgomery American Legion Post 79’s 'Thank a Living Veteran' program recognizes Dallas J. Horejsi

Dallas Jerome, son of Charles and Leona (Honza) Horejsi, was born March 25, 1948, at the hospital in New Prague. He had four brothers and three sisters—Dennis, Donald, twins Donna and Duane, Dalleen, Darrell, and Diane.

As a young farm boy, Dallas grew up about four miles southeast of Montgomery and attended Montgomery Elementary School and later Montgomery High School (through 10th grade).

After departing school, he worked around the family home and for local farmers. Dallas also worked at Polar Panel in Montgomery, Brinkton’s in Le Center, Green Giant Company in Montgomery, and at Minnesota Valley Engineering in New Prague.

In 1968, Dallas received a “friendly letter” from the county Draft Board stating he was being drafted into the United States Army.

But, before he could leave home, the young Dallas, who was a car enthusiast, had to get rid of his seven cars and miscellaneous auto parts before reporting for duty as his father didn’t appreciate it on the property and told Dallas, “This junk will be off the yard before you leave home.”

Dallas reported to the U. S. Army Training Station at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, for basic combat training. Upon completion of basic training, Dallas returned to Montgomery for a short leave before...
