Shop With a Cop delights kids, officers

Forget red and green.

It was all about red and blue police lights--and presents, pizza, and fun--at Le Sueur County’s holiday Shop With a Cop event on Wednesday night, Dec. 11 in New Prague.

Twenty kids participated in the sixth annual event that helps foster positive relationships between youth and officers.

“My cop is so cool,” spouted Collin about his partner for the night, Le Sueur Police Officer Aaron Thieke. “I even got to ride in the police car and run the lights and sirens and stuff. Did you hear me sing Jingle Bells over the radio in the squad car?”

Officer Thieke couldn’t help but smile when Collin turned around and asked him what his favorite part of the night was. “That’s easy! Meeting you and getting to know you is my favorite part,” he answered before being embraced in a big hug from Collin.

The county’s Department of Human Services (DHS) team selected the kids who got to participate in the event based on a variety of eligibility requirements. Approval from the children’s guardians was also required.

The event started at Spirit of Life Church in New Prague where kids met and paired off with their assigned cops and started shopping at the make-shift “store” that was set up in the worship area. The items were purchased using donations raised by....
