Celebrating freedom fighters

“America, America God shed his grace on thee.”

These words were sung with fervor by the large crowd gathered at the annual Freedom Celebration held Sunday in Lonsdale.

Held the Sunday before Independence Day, Freedom Celebration happens to honor every veteran and volunteer who serves our nation, said Pastor Ben Fenderson.

Fenderson, the senior pastor at Triumphant Life Church in Lonsdale, said that he began holding this service as a promise to his now 99 year old grandfather to carry on the mission.

His grandfather served in World War II and was also a pastor. He said his grandfather met and served with many soldiers who didn’t know God or the Bible, and he wanted to make sure they did.

When he came back and was preaching at Grace Church in Eden Prairie, he began his own Freedom Celebration, which Fenderson carries on in Lonsdale.

“I promised that I’d share the Gospel and that I’m going to tell them about Jesus,” Fenderson said.

This year, Triumphant Life partnered with Trondhjem Lutheran Church to bring the celebration to life. It was originally to be held at Sticha Park, but because of the rain and wind, was moved inside the sanctuary at Trondhjem.
