Home Run Derby for Aurora, June 15 event benefits girl with rare diagnosis

Saturday's Home Run Derby at Union Hill ballpark will benefit Aurora Jesperson, 21-month-old daughter of
Nate and Sarah Jesperson of Elko New Market. Aurora was diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome, a rare form of epilepsy, and other developmental delays. 

Who will step up to bat for a local family’s little princess?

The third annual Home Run Derby sponsored by Ted Nytes, owner of Nytes Cabinets and Home Town Bats, will be held this Saturday, June 15 at Union Hill ballpark west of New Prague, starting at 5 p.m. The event will benefit a little girl named Aurora and her family, who could use a boost of spirits and funds at this time.

Little 21-month-old Aurora Jesperson, daughter of Nate and Sarah Jesperson of Elko New Market, has many things--big blue eyes, sweet wisps of soft brown hair, a heart-melting giggle, and three big brothers who adore her.

She also has Dravet Syndrome, a rare form of epilepsy, and developmental delays due to chromosome deletions.

“She hit the jackpot in a sense. It’s so rare that only 25 people in the world—yes, the world—are known to have a similar diagnosis,” explained Aurora’s mom, Sarah. “There is no cure, and there are very few guidelines.”

Little Aurora was born on August 16, 2017. She was a happy, healthy baby... or so everyone thought. “She was a sleepy baby, and we needed to supplement with formula to help her gain weight, but every baby is different… There was nothing alerting us to what was going on with her at that point,” Sarah explained.

That all changed one early November morning. “She was a little over two months old and I went in—it was about 3 a.m.—to pick her up beacause she was awake, and....
