Screening of ‘Singin’ in the Grain’ sells out

A sold out audience attended the fifth official screening of the documentary “Singin’ in the Grain” at the New Prague High School auditorium on Sunday, May 5. More than 600 people gathered for the movie, which is about Czech heritage and music that covers more than 40 years of the Eddie Shimota Band.

There were scenes from Minnesota’s “Czech Triangle” (New Prague, Montgomery, Veseli and Lonsdale) and St. Paul’s Sokol Hall. The movie followed the late Eddie Shimota Sr., his son, Eddie Shimota Jr., Jerry Minar and others. There were also moments from area festivals such as New Prague’s Dozinky Czech Harvest Festival, Montgomery’s Kolacky Days and Veseli’s Ho-Down.

The movie has had a positive reception with all five of its screenings being sold out. During its world premier at the Minneapolis/St.Paul International Film Festival it was among the top 10 movies out of the 250 films shown. Eddie Shimota Jr. said there has been such good feedback to the movie that there are plans for another showing, but they don’t know when yet. The next screening could be next month.

After the May 5 screening Shimota Jr., director Al Milgrom and Minar discussed the movie and had a question and answer session. Milgrom mentioned with all his film footage he has enough for.......
