Bernard J. “Bernie” Sobczak, 100

Bernard J. “Bernie” Sobczak, age 100, of New Prague, died peacefully on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at Mala Strana Care and Rehabilitation Center.  Bernie was born September 9, 1924, in Buffalo, New York, to Baltazar and Helen (Beyger) Sobczak.  Bernie graduated from Bennett High School in Buffalo, New York, and went to attain a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Buffalo.  He worked as a Chemist for Gould Manufacturing (National Battery) in Buffalo, New York, until the company moved to Minnesota, where Bernie relocated as well.  It was there that Bernie met and married Adeline Buescher on July 23, 1966, at St. Benedict Catholic Church in New Prague, where they made their home.  Bernie was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a faith-filled member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.  Bernie was an avid reader and devoured anything that had to do with history.  Bernie enjoyed tinkering and a love of cats, particularly his favorite “Skeeter”.  He was determined to live to 100, which he exceeded by 3 months.

Bernie is survived by his nieces and nephews residing in Alaska and New York, respectively.  He is preceded in death by sisters Stephanie and Alice and a brother, Joseph.  Bernie will be remembered by his close friend Norbert (“Norb”) and by his nephew Michael (Mike), who knew him not only as an uncle but as a mentor and friend.

Graveside services will be held at a later date where he will rest beside his wife of 48 years, Adeline.
