Board gets class size update

School finance director Sandy Linn gave an update on elementary class sizes to the New Prague Area School Board during its meeting Monday, Aug. 13.

For the coming year, the projection for the district had been 1,852 students in K-5, and right now enrollment stands at 1,900. Kindergarten was projected at 296 and is at 308.

Linn presented numbers grade by grade, for each of the three elementary schools in the district. She noted that at Raven Stream, both the first and fifth grades were on the high end of the range the district uses as a target.

"First grade is closest right now to having to add another section. We are keeping an eye on things," she said. Raven Stream is projected to have 700 students, 26 more than last year.

At Falcon Ridge, the fifth grade class is at the low end of the range, while fourth grade is at the high end and may also need to add a section. Falcon Ridge is projected to have 12 fewer students than last year, at 613.

At Eagle View, second, third and fourth are on the low end, wth Kindergarten and second grade teachers having already been added.

"Those numbers are on the low end, while fifth grade is on the high end," Linn said.

Eagle View enrollment is up 20 from last year.

Superintendent Tim Dittberner noted that the district as a whole has an elementary class size of 23.8 students, which is about one student higher than last year. It was also the average for the region last year.
