Consider a commitment to public service

In two weeks, residents of New Prague and of the New Prague Area School District will get the opportunity to become a decision maker in their community.

The City of New Prague will have three of its four city council seats on the ballot this fall, as well as the office of mayor. Two of the council seats are for four-year terms and the mayor and one council seat is for a two-year term.

Also this year, for the first time, New Prague Area School Board members will be on the general election ballot in an even-numbered year. The board made the decision several years ago to switch from odd-year to even-year elections. Three of the seven board seats will be on the ballot, for four-year terms.

The opportunity to serve your community can be a thankless job. It seems no matter what you decide, someone will be opposed. Hindsight is always 20-20, so any decision that is made given the current knowledge and facts will be subject to criticism from people years later when the situation changes.

Still, serving gives a person an opportunity to influence the future of the city or school system. A council person or board member can help make decisions on policy, on spending and organization of the city. Most elected officials in small towns or school districts are not in it for the money - the salary earned does little to compensate for the time and effort put in in representing your constituents. Still, they serve because of a commitment - a need to serve the community and share their experience and knowledge.

Filing for these offices begins Tuesday, July 31, and continues until Tuesday, Aug. 14. The election will be on November 6. We encourage anyone considering serving to look into the commitment. We hope plenty of people will answer this call and be willing to commit themselves to public service.
