Council approves bids on 2019 street project

The New Prague City Council approved four items concerning the 2019 street and utility improvement project at its Monday, April 1, meeting. The council unanimously approved a resolution accepting a bid from GMH Asphalt Corporation of Chaska to do the project. They also unanimously approved an agreement for construction engineering services with Short Elliott Hendrickson (SEH), Inc. Two items with Scott County turning back County Road 37 to the city were approved by a 4-1 vote.

Bids City Engineer Chris Cavett of SEH Inc., presented the four items. He said the city received three bids for the project from GMH Asphalt Corporation, Valley Paving Inc., of Shakopee and OMG Midwest, Inc. (formerly Chard). He noted that GMH has never done a project in New Prague before. Based on references, background checks and their low bid of $3.1 million they were the best choice. Cavett said the city does have to go with the lowest bidder, if they don’t it has to have a good reason. Cavett said the council had a choice of going with an alternate bid of $3.2 million where they would mill the street, do an underseal and then do the overlay. The added step would help extend the life of the street. The council unanimously approved the alternate bid.
