Dedication of new Veterans Memorial on Saturday

A dedication ceremony will be held for New Prague’s new Veterans Memorial, 410 Main St. E, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, rain or shine.

Paul Busch of the New Prague American Legion will be the MC for the ceremony, which includes Linda Fahrenkamp singing the National Anthem and God Bless America with the New Prague Veterans Honor Guard presenting the colors. Father Eugene Theisen of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church will provide the invocation. Speakers at the ceremony will be Mayor Duane Jirik, DaleLyn Means and JoLyn Means Williams who are members of the group that has been working with the American Legion on the project. Means and Williams are family of the late Lance Corporal Dale Means, the project was started in his name about nine years ago. George Tupy will read the names of those on the Honor Wall with Marine veteran Brian Tupy ringing the Bell of Eternity for each name. The Honor Guard will fire a three shot volley and Steve Skluzacek and Wilfred Heine will play echo Taps.

While bleachers will be set up for the ceremony, people are asked to bring chairs.

As part of an effort to honor veterans and in its continuing effort to bring history to life, the New Prague Area Historical Society will have available copies of the book “Letters to Home….. New Prague’s Contribution to World War II,” written by Tom Vanasek.
