Flavian Weiers, 91

Flavian H. Weiers, age 91, of Union Hill, died peacefully on Sunday, May 20, 2018, at his home. He was born May 12, 1927, in Derrynane Township, Le Sueur County to Henry E. and Cecelia A. (Wolf) Weiers. He attended school at Union Hill and entered the US Army in 1950, was discharged in 1952, and then served in the Army Reserves until 1956. Flavian married Edna L. Barten on June 11, 1955 at St. John’s Catholic Church and the couple made their home in rural Union Hill. Flavian started out with H & W Equipment after his military service, drove gravel truck for a short time, and then went to work in construction for Kratochvil Construction Company until retirement after more than 25 years. Flavian was a 49er, belonged to both the American Legion and VFW, and Catholic Aid. He was most proud of his service in the Army and being a Korean veteran and one of the highlights of his life was going on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in September of 2017. In his earlier years, he loved to fish and hunt. He was meticulous in every aspect of his life. Gardening was a favorite hobby and last year, he and Edna canned 116 quarts of pickles so his objective this year was to fill all the empty jars. He was a “numbers guy” all his life, keeping track and counting everything; on his 91st birthday, he knew how many sunrises and sunsets there had been in his 91 years, taking into account the leap years as well. Every day at 4 PM would find him on his porch for “social hour” with a Busch Light in his hand and all were welcome to join him!  His sense of humor was a gift to everyone who knew him.  He had a quick wit and making people laugh came easily.  His positivity was contagious.  The glass wasn't just always half full, it was full!  His work ethic was legendary and he left the legacy: why pay someone else to do what he could do himself. Flavian especially enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; family meant everything to him.

Flavian is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Edna of Union Hill; children, Jeff (Sue) Weiers of New Prague, Greg (Jayne) Weiers of Lonsdale, Audrey (Dan) Zurn of Belle Plaine, Roger (Patricia) Weiers of Union Hill, Marty (Farrell) Weiers of Parkville, MO, Bridget (Dan) Smith of Shakopee; brother, Francis Weiers of Union Hill; sister, Viola Michel of New Prague; sister-in-law, Leona Weiers of New Prague; 20 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Norbert & Edwin “Speed” Weiers.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, May 24, 2018, at 10 AM at St. John’s Catholic Church in Union Hill with Father Roger Hessian officiating. Visitation will take place on Wednesday from 4-8 PM and Thursday morning from 7:30 – 9:30 at Bruzek Funeral Home. Burial will occur in the church cemetery, where military honors will be conducted, followed by lunch at the KC Hall. bruzekfuneralhome.com
