Girls hockey opens at home Tuesday

The Winter Sports Season at New Prague High School gets underway Tuesday, Nov. 12, when the Trojan girls hockey team hosts Dodge County in its season opener. Game time is 7:15 p.m. The team began practice on Monday, Oct. 28.

The Trojans are coming off a 14-9-3 season under thirdyear Head Coach Taylor Ries. They lost their top two scorers in Lindsay Bjerke and Kaitlyn Blair and their assist leader in Emily Sabol, all three of whom are playing college hockey this season.

Top returning scorer is senior Abby Pirkl (12 G, 8 A), while sophomore goaltender Mariah Marek (2.28 GAA) returns for her third season between the pipes. Coach Ries expects junior Payton Hard and sophomore Ellie Skaja to step up and improve.

He’s looking forward to the leadership of seniors Pirkl, Lauren Moravchik, Kianna Howard and Bridget O’Brien, who will serve as team captains. "They’ve done a good job of bringing the girls together both on and off the ice," he said. “It’s going to be a challenging year for the girls. We have strong goaltending and solid defense, we need to replace our scorers. "

The Trojans’ schedule has been beefed up a bit to reflect their status as a Class AA team. They will have non-conference games against section foes...
