Helen M. Wolf, 101

Helen M. Wolf, age 101, of New Prague, died peacefully with her family at her side on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at Mala Strana Health and Rehabilitation Center.  Helen was born in New Prague on March 27, 1923, to Wencel and Rose A. (Bisek) Lexa.  She graduated from New Prague High School and married a young man by the name of Leo Wolf, on June 29, 1948, in New Prague.  In addition to raising their five children, Helen became an integral part of New Prague Jewelers, working for over 20 years at Gehlen Jewelry and then another 10 years for Marquardt Jewelry.  She would remain as the chief engraver for Marquardt’s well into her 90’s because of her steady hand.

Helen was a prolific seamstress, and her sewing machine was the first thing one would notice when entering her home.  She had the first button-holer in New Prague and sewed all her children’s clothing, and then the grandchildren and great-grandchildren when they came along, pajamas being a favorite!  Her sewing and crafting skills were legendary and encompassed everything from sewing, knitting, and crocheting.  Because of her ability, she became a natural choice to head the sewing booth at the annual St. Wenceslaus Church Festival, creating mountains of potholders and dish towels, all sought after by patrons of the festival.  Her faith was a cornerstone of her life and she was an active member of St. Wenceslaus, teaching religion classes and a dedicated member of the Ladies Guild (now the Council of Catholic Women).  When her children were young, she also served as their Cub Scout Den Mother.

Her gifts also extended to the bountiful gardens that she and Leo raised, and she utilized all the fruits of those gardens.  She canned the vegetables that could be canned; she made dandelion, rhubarb and basswood wines and chokecherry and elderberry jam!  Helen was also a gifted artist, famous for her paintings and Snoopy illustrations.

Helen had a wonderfully dry sense of humor and could come up with a quip without a moment’s hesitation. Feisty and direct, she was never afraid to say what was on her mind, and one always knew where they stood with her.  She remained engaged and active, enjoying her family and friends, celebrating with joy her 100th birthday and living life to the fullness of her “almost 102 years”.

Helen is survived by her children, Carol (Francis) Brezina of Faribault, John (Nancy) Wolf of New Prague, Mark (Chris) Wolf of New Prague, Joyce (Fayssal) Husseini of Berkley, MA, Paul (Suzanne Vincent)  Wolf of Bryson City, NC; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Margie Lexa of New Prague.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Leo, on April 5, 2011; brother, Joseph Lexa; sister, Pauline O’Brien.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with Father Eugene Theisen officiating.  Visitation will take place at Bruzek Funeral Home that morning from 8:30-10:30. Burial will occur at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery with lunch following at the KC Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery Fund.
