It’s County Fair season

Next week the Rice County Fair starts its six-day run in Faribault. The Scott County Fair follows a week later in Jordan, and the Le Sueur County Fair starts in mid-August.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines “county fair” in a very simple way: “A fair usually held annually at a set location in a county especially to exhibit local agricultural products and livestock.”

But a county fair is so much more…

It’s a place where people from all over the county, and from other counties, can gather and celebrate the rural lifestyle.

It’s a young 4-H’er working for months to make sure his rabbit, calf, hog, chicken or other livestock are in top condition and ready to be judged.

It’s going with friends to enjoy music, ride on carnival rides, and watch cars crash into each other at a demolition derby.

It’s enjoying all sorts of foods, some basic fair foods and some exotic, to thrill your taste buds, whether it’s a corn dog, mini-donuts, pork chops on a stick or even ostrich burgers.

It’s a place to watch horse shows, dog shows, cow shows, hog shows, etc.

It’s where you can stroll through exhibit buildings and get information on local organizations and businesses.

It’s a place where anyone, at any age, can bring in an entry… whether it’s baked goods, artwork or garden vegetables, and hope to bring home a prized blue ribbon.

It’s an event where you’re sure to find something that you’re interested in. Make plans to get to one of these area county fairs:

• The Rice County Fair runs Tuesday, July 17 through Sunday, July 22, in Faribault.

• The Scott County Fair runs Wednesday, July 25 through Sunday, July 29, in Jordan.

• The Le Sueur County Fair runs Thursday, Aug. 16, through Sunday, Aug. 19, in Le Center.
