New Prague Deputy Registrar office enters next chapter in its history

New Prague’s Deputy Registrar office moved recently as it transitioned from First Bank & Trust on the east end of town to 118 Main St. E in the downtown. The office closed at First Bank & Trust on Tuesday, Dec. 28, and reopened at its new location under Jared O’Reilly of Savage on Monday, Jan. 3, 2022.

The Deputy Registrar office was first established at First Bank & Trust when it was still State Bank of New Prague and located along Central Avenue N.

“At that time people had to drive to Le Center or Shakopee for tabs or get a new driver license,” said Don Sirek, who was then the president of State Bank of New Prague. He explained that a neighbor of his at the time was Bob Vanasek, who was in the state legislature. Sirek noted that people could mail in their information to get their tabs and license, and thought that or driving to either location was inconvenient. “It was just ridiculous,” said Sirek.

Both Le Center and Shakopee are more than 20 miles from New Prague and depending on how busy an office was a person could spend quite a bit of time waiting.

Sirek explained the situation to Vanasek and asked if anything could be done. Vanasek began working on it and was able to get a Deputy Registrar office at New Prague in 1978.
