Although the little steps toward getting better aren’t yet showing up in the win-loss column, the New Prague girls’ ice hockey team is taking small steps the Trojans hope will show up as they head into the conference season.
With about a month left in its season, New Prague is hoping for a turnaround. The Trojans need to win some games to receive a better seed, one that will spare them an opening round match against a powerhouse like Minnetonka. A year ago, the Trojans fell in their opening section game, 14-1, to a Minnetonka team that reached the state tournament.
New Prague competed in the Louis Schmitz Holiday Classic last week in Farmington. The team suffered three setbacks, falling to host Farmington, 9-0, East Ridge, 2-1, and Owatonna, 5-1.
This week, New Prague will be back on home ice Thursday, Jan. 4, 7 p.m., against Mound Westonka/Southwest Christian. Saturday, Jan. 6, 3 p.m., the Trojans will honor their seniors, girls who have played together since their 8U days, in a home game against Mankato West-St.Clair.
“We’re really hoping for a great crowd,” said NPHS coach Madison Drazan. “We have a month until the section seeding meeting and we need to turn things around. This is a good week to get started.”
Farmington 9, Trojans 0 The tournament host Tigers blew open a close game with five second-period goals Wednesday, Dec. 27, at Schmitz-Maki Ice Arena.
