Orioles thump Shakopee

With plenty of offense and solid pitching, the New Prague Orioles evened their DakotaRice-Scott League record at 2-2 with a decisive win Thursday, May 22.

The Orioles will face St. Patrick tomorrow evening, Friday, May 30, 7:30 p.m., at Memorial Park. Sunday, June 1, 2 p.m., New Prague will go duck hunting when Montgomery comes to town. The Mallards ended NP’s season last fall in New Prague.

The Orioles will welcome Faribault to the friendly confines of Memorial Park Wednesday, June 4, 7:30 p.m.

Orioles 13, Shakopee 1 The Orioles jumped out to an early lead against the Coyotes and never looked back as NP improved its DRS mark to 2-0, 2-2 overall. Dan Ring drove in James Fuerniss and Gavin Bergman with a single in the bottom of the first. They would add two more in the bottom of the second inning with hits from Tommy McBroom and Eric Wagner.

Overall, the Orioles had 16 hits including doubles off the wall by Aidan Dorzinski and Jake Mader. Wagner finished the truncated game with three hits, while Dorzinski, Jake Deutsch and Fuerniss each added two apiece. Bergman was the winning pitcher going six innings and striking out 11 Coyotes.

John Barten had a hit for Shakopee and Jeff Hohenstein added an RBI single. Jake Poppitz was the losing pitcher.

In other DRS action:

Lonsdale 7, Montgomery 5 The Aces completed a home-and-home sweep over the Mallards Sunday, May 25. Montgomery Mallards opened the scoring in the first after Cole Pint singled, scoring one run. Tegan Mellgren singled, which helped the Aces tie the game at one in the bottom of the second.

Lonsdale took the lead in the bottom of the third when Jack Skluzacek doubled, scoring one run to put the Aces in a 2-1 lead.

But the Mallards battled back in the top of the fourth. Ryan Iverson doubled, scoring two runs, to give the Quackers a 3-2 advantage.

The Aces retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning after Montgomery Mallards committed an error. Jack Skluzacek hit a sacrifice fly, Caden Sterling singled to the left side of the infield, Spencer Mellgren tripled to right field, and Tegan Mellgren doubled down the right field line, each driving in a run.

Tegan Mellgren earned the win for the Aces. He allowed four hits and four runs (two earned) over six innings, striking out seven and walking five.

Lonsdale collected 11 hits in the game. Caden Sterling, Jack Skluzacek, Marty Kalina and Tegan Mellgren each collected two hits. Jack Skluzacek and Tegan Mellgren each drove in two runs for the Aces.

Brandon Gentz took the hard-luck loss for the Mallards allowing four earned runs over five innings of work with Max Krautkremer pitching three innings of hitless relief, striking out four Aces. Brady Flicek collected the save.

Ryan Iverson led Montgomery Mallards with two runs batted in. The righthanded hitter went 1-for-5 on the day. Cole Pint led the Montgomery Mallards with two hits in four at bats. Dawson Pint led Montgomery Mallards with two walks.

Lonsdale 8, Montgomery 6 The bottom of the lineup carried the Aces by Montgomery Friday, May 23, in Montgomery.

Spencer Mellgren, Mike Alvestad, and Tegan Mellgren combined for six of the Aces’ nine hits in the victory. They scored three runs and drove in three.

Lonsdale was the first to get on the board in the first when Jack Skluzacek grounded out, scoring one run.

Montgomery’s Matt Smith grounded out, which helped the Mallards tie the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the first.

In the top of the third, the Aces broke up the tie when Jack Skluzacek singled, driving in a run. A home run to left field by Caden Sterling extended Lonsdale’s advantage to 4-1.

The Mallards tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth, 4-4, and later, 5-5. Ryan Iverson’s solo home run to center field gave the Quackers a 6-5 lead in the home half of the seventh.

But Lonsdale dealt Montgomery the loss in the top of the eighth inning after Spencer Mellgren tripled down the right field line, Tegan Mellgren singled down the right field line and Ashton Pauly was struck by a pitch, each scoring one run.
