The promise of a new year

We are now into the first week of a new year and like every turning of the calendar year this one holds promise for what we can accomplish over the next 12 months. For some of us that is something such as losing weight, for others it’s taking a few more walks, while a few of us are hoping to cut down how much time we spend on social media and there are those who are going to reach for a new job or buy a house.

No matter what it is, many of us are glad to have another year in which we can try and succeed. It’s one thing that we often prefer to think about, how we are going to succeed. How there will be roses, clear skies, sunshine and cheers as we succeed at the task. We much prefer that over the possibility of not succeeding. What might be even worse is the fear of what could go wrong, leaving us paralyzed. Some might think it’s better to stay where we are at, that what we have is good enough. In what some have have described as just settling. Deciding that settling for this job or lifestyle is okay for us.

It is a that point that some of us decide that we need some encouragement. Sometimes it comes from within ourselves, because we are sick and tired of where we are at in our lives. For others it comes from family or friends providing words to rouse us with or what some have labeled as tough love. Either way we decide that it’s time to move forward and try to get out of the state we are in.

There’s a line that many will consider a tired and cliched one, but has some truth in it: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” We all have our journeys to make and it can begin this year.
