Retired, Dennis Pomije enjoys wheeling around in his shop

Dennis Pomije of New Prague has found a new hobby for retirement. He makes recumbent bikes out of old bicycle parts in his backyard shop. (Chuck Kajer Photo)

Dennis Pomije likes to fix problems.

Growing up on a farm, he learned a lot about fixing things. "If something broke down, my dad had to find a way to fix it," he said. The ability to fix things also came in handy as he worked as a builder and a painter, and later as owner of Strike Force Bowl.

Even in retirement, Dennis still enjoys going into his shop and fixing things. He has restored a couple of older vehicles and worked on other projects as well.

"I was always working on cars, then one day my brother- in-law brought me a bunch of bicycles, and I would work at fixing them up. Then Gene Tupy brought a bunch of old bikes to my shop. The bikes were in pretty bad shape, but I was able to use them for parts and repair some of them."

About four years ago, while on a camping trip, he noticed a lot of people driving recumbent bicycles. Arecumbent bike is one in which....
