School board sets preliminary tax levy

The New Prague Area School Board approved the preliminary levy payable in 2019 during its meeting Monday, Sept. 24.

As it does each year, the board set the preliminary at “maximum.” Finance Director Sandy Linn explained that the Minnesota Department of Education has not finalized all of its numbers for the current school year, so her department does not have any definite numbers regarding the upcoming budget at this time.

“We have some preliminary numbers, but we know they will change, and we need to have the ability to make those changes,” she told board members.

The board is required to set a preliminary levy by September 30, and its final levy by the end of the calendar year. When setting the final levy, the board can lower the amount from the preliminary levy, but cannot increase the amount.

Linn said she expects to have the final numbers from MDE next month. She did say, however, that right now, the numbers are relatively flat, and the amount levied could go down from the prior year’s levy.

She said the district’s adjusted net tax capacity is up 8 percent. “Statewide, the average is up 5 percent, which means property values here are going up faster than the state average. That will mean a little less equalization aid from the state,” Linn said.
