St. Wenc School cancels classes due to power outage
Students at St. Wenceslaus School in New Prague had a day off on Wednesday, Dec. 11, as a power outage led to the cancelling of classes. The power outage hit a portion of New Prague’s downtown around 3:30 a.m.
New Prague’s Electric Distribution Supervisor Ken Zweber said crews immediately began working to restore power and had electricity back on between 7:15-7:30 a.m. on December 11. Zweber explained the power outage was due to underground equipment failure. Crews are trying to find out why the equipment failed. About 30 to 35 customers, from residents to businesses, were affected. The majority of those customers were between Columbus Avenue North to Central Avenue North.
St. Wenceslaus School Principal Kim Doyle said she was alerted at 5:30 a.m. about the power outage. One of the school’s custodians called her that the heat and lights were off in the school and that the city had been working on fixing the problem for several hours.
“At around 6 a.m. nothing had been fixed and so we made the decision to cancel school for the day,” said Doyle. “At 6 a.m. we could see that the heat was not going to be repaired and the school building was getting cold.”
