Trojan girls CC off to fast start

The New Prague Trojan girls cross country team opened its 2018 season at the St. Olaf Showcase Thursday, Aug. 30, in Northfield, and had a strong showing. The Trojans placed 13th of 33 squads at the meet, which included several nationallyranked teams.

The Trojans had a good grouping of four runners who placed close together, from 67th to 78th, all finishing within 14 seconds of each other. Iris McCarthy placed 67th in a time of 20 minutes, 55 seconds. Sydney Siele was 70th in 21:01, Nora Rosemeier was 74th at 21:023 and Morgan Brandt was 78th in 21:09. The fifth Trojan to finish was Kate Chromy, 133rd in 21:59. Abby Carlson was 147th in 2:14 and Elsie Hatlevig was 161st in 2:41.

Four of the Trojans’ top five were seniors. Rosemeier is a freshman.

“We spent the last three weeks practicing and many of the girls trained hundreds of miles over the summer,” Coach Shawn Brandt said. “It was nice to toe the starting line. It is a long time to run without competing.”
