Trojans pound their way back to indoor softball state tournament

With a pair of solid wins capping an undefeated regular season, New Prague’s indoor softball team has returned to the state tournament May 16-17 at Chanhassen High School.

The bracket for the tournament has not yet been established. The tournament opens Friday evening with the semifinals, finals and consolation play slated for Saturday, May 17. By virtue of their 6-0 record, the Trojans expect a No. 1 seed in the bracket’s south division.

The Trojans finished third last year. They fell in the semifinals to Dakota United, 8-5. New Prague – a cooperative effort involving Belle Plaine, Jordan and Tri-City United – finished the season with a 13-10 win over Osseo.

Trojans 9, South Washington Co. 7 New Prague needed a big five-run fifth inning to secure the win over South Washington County Thursday, May 1, at Park High School.

“South Washington is a team that is right on the cusp of beating good teams and they gave us all we could handle today. I feel like we are a way better team than they are, but today we really struggled putting quality innings together,” said coach Jeremy Kalal. “This was our final game of the regular season and we accomplished our goal of remaining undefeated, but I don't feel comfortable with how we've been playing lately.”

Trailing 2-0, NP scored twice in the third inning to tie the score, 3-3, once in the fourth and five times in the fifth to build an 8-5 lead. South Washington County added two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but New Prague squelched the rally with its defense.
