Work on new Hy-Vee continues

Work continues on the new Hy-Vee Dollar Fresh grocery store, which will be in the former Shopko Hometown Store at 200 10th Ave. SE. New Prague city staff and Hy-Vee officials are working on a revised plan for the building.

City Planning Director Ken Ondich informed the New Prague Planning Commission at its Wednesday, Aug. 26, meeting that city staff is waiting for a final plan to be given to them. So far Hy-Vee is proposing to include additions on the north and south ends of the existing building. Hy-Vee owns the lot to the south and is working on building a new loading dock and more parking in that area.

The business has also been talking with City’s Edge Collision, which owns the property to the west, but they have not been able to come to an agreement on that property.

New Prague City Council member Shawn Ryan asked if there was any way the city could help. Ondich replied city staff did attempt to help, but the issue comes down to a price for the property.

Ondich said Hy-Vee has a lot on its plate with the New Prague store and the recent completion of a new store in St. Peter.
