Le Sueur County Sheriff Mounted Posse’s free Rodeo Fun Night last Friday, June 19, at the county fairgrounds in Le Center had a pleasant evening, narrowly missing severe storms that hampered events from the Twin Cities northward.
    A crowd of more than 500 people showed up to watch all ages compete for the best times in barrel racing, pole bending, mutton bustin’, monkey in a tree, a catalog race, a magic carpet ride race.

    Those looking to try a new 4th of July event this year are in luck. The City of Lonsdale announced earlier this year that it would be hosting a Founders Festival on July 3 from 3 p.m. to midnight. 
    A multitude of items will be happening over the course of the day, celebrating both the United States’ 250th anniversary and Lonsdale’s history.

    The Montgomery Area Community Club (MACC) held its annual Kolacky Days Meet and Greet in Memorial Park Monday evening.
    Scott Smisek entertained attendees before the formal ceremony where people could grab a free kolacky and cookie or spend a few dollars on the new merchandise for the 92nd Annual Kolacky Days which will happen July 24-26.
    This year’s six candidates were introduced with their Little Sisters. The part of the event that everyone really waited for was the announcement of this year’s grand marshals. 

    Student athletes from Tri-City United High School’s trapshooting team competed this past weekend in Alexandria for a spot in the Minnesota State High School League’s (MSHSL) Clay Target State Tournament happening on Friday, June 26.
    USA Clay Target League’s Minnesota State High School Clay Target League’s Trap Shooting Tournament, June 15-23, at Alexandria Community and Technical College’s site, is the qualifier for the MSHSL state event. Only the top 40 teams, and top 100 in both boys and girls, move on to the MSHSL state event.

    Most people are aware of the area food shelves and Tri-City United School’s summer meal program for kids 1-18. Even with such programs, Caitlin Huiras thinks there is still much need in this area to help food insecurity.
    Huiras is the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce executive director and quit her job, in part, as a public health program specialist in Carver County to start the nonprofit 507 Food Share in Montgomery. She has a formal education background in nutrition and public health, and her former job focused nutrition with Carver County. 

    Tri-City United Baseball ended up placing fourth in the Big South Conference for big schools, Marshall took the top spot for big schools but Fairmont won over them from the small schools section of the conference.
    Brendan Frederick and Keegan O’Meara were named BLACK All-Conference. 
    TCU Softball also placed fourth for big schools in the Big South Conference, with St. Peter taking the top spot for big schools. Like baseball, St. Peter was beat out for top placement in the conference by Jackson County Central.

    Lonsdale Chamber of Commerce’s fourth annual Badges & Bobbers kids fishing event finally had its first good-weather year. The previous few years were plagued with either rain or unpleasant heat. Friday, June 12, though was a mostly sunny and pleasant low-70’s day — the perfect fishing weather.
    The chamber teamed up with Fishing for Life out of Minneapolis, who supplied the kids with the bait, tackle, and other necessary equipment to go fishing with. Kids even got to bring home a free tackle box and pole.

    The Minnesota chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society MS 150 bike ride on Saturday and Sunday, June 13 and 14, brought over 2,000 bicycle riders raising money for charity to Le Sueur County and Montgomery.
    After doing the first 75 miles of their ride in a loop in the southwest portion of the county on Saturday and spending a night at camp in St. Peter, riders made their way through Montgomery on their way to Buck Hill in Burnsville on the second 75-mile track. 

    Two serious crashes this past week left one 59-year-old man dead, and two others with life-threatening injuries. The first crash occurred Sunday morning, June 7, near the Montgomery Trap Range on Highway 21. The second crash occurred the morning of Wednesday, June 10, on Highway 13/21 in front of Tri-City United High School.

    Montgomery Fire Department celebrates its 150th anniversary this Friday and Saturday. 
    Friday already has a full roster for the golf tournament at Montgomery National Golf Course. A shotgun start will ensue at noon, and persons are welcome to come an be spectators for the golfers.
    Saturday the department has planned way more than extra of what their typical dance and beer garden festivities have every year.
    It starts off with a car roll-in from 9-11:30 a.m., where firefighter Sean Benz will perform a set on 1st Street from 10-11:30 a.m.

Rita Mae Charles - February 11, 1933 – June 9, 2026

Marilyn J. Campbell, age 96, of Montgomery, died on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at Traditions of Montgomery.

Marilyn was born on February 25, 1930, she was the daughter of Tracy and Beatrice (May) Chase in Minneapolis. She attended high school in Anoka and continued her education at Anoka Vocational School where she received her LPN license in 1969. In 1985, she received her RN license from Anoka Ramsey College. She practiced for over 30 years in the nursing field.

    A nine-year-old state track record has been shattered by a Tri-City United (TCU) quartet of runners.
    The 4 x 200-meter relay team of junior Kaitlyn Hartwig, sophomores Carly Hartwig and Jillian Houn, and eighth grader Cami Hartwig are now the proud owners of the fastest time in Minnesota State history, winning the Class AA State Championship with a time of 1:37.90 at the Class AA State Meet held Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6 at St. Michael-Albertville High School.

    Friday’s performances of the junior version of Footloose by Child’s Play Theatre was a fantastic one parents and friends could be proud of.
    The two performances on June 5 were filled with minimalistic set and lighting and it really let the talent the mostly kindergarten through eighth graders in the show shine.
    Grayson Wood, who played Ren McCormack, led the troupes of young adults in their dancing mischief. Cailyn Meadows, who played Ariel Moore — the preacher’s daughter, also tried to lead her posse of girls into the same mischief.

    Le Sueur County took a step to pump the brakes on data centers being built in the county. At the Board of Commissioners meeting on May 26, the county unanimously passed a one-year moratorium on data center construction.
    The moratorium covers unincorporated areas of Le Sueur County. Cities within the county can still make their own decisions.
    “If a city wants to have a data center, we don’t have any control over that at all,” Commissioner David Preisler said. “If they want to, they’re not affected by this ordinance. They’ve got their own planning and zoning.”

    The filing period to run for office in the 2026 mid-term elections with the Minnesota Secretary of State closed Tuesday, June 2, at 5 p.m. Most seats open for election on the county commissioner races, and state races showing up with both a democratic and republican candidates on the ballot.
