Bucs win 22nd straight
The WEM boys basketball team picked up its second straight South-Sub-Section win Thursday, March 7 with a 71-61 victory over Nicollet in Lake Crystal. The Bucs opened the playoffs with an 86-31 win over St. Clair Monday, March 4. Junior Grant McBroom scored a game-high 29 points. Senior Bladyn Bartelt added 15 and junior Cole Kokoschke scored 13 for the Bucs against Nicollet. WEM (25-1 overall) will face Springfield (25-2) Monday, March 11 at 6 p.m. at Gustavus Adolphus College for the South Sub-Section Championship. Springfield is rated No. 2 in Class A and WEM is rated No. 9. Springfield is led by senior Isaac Fink, who has scored more than 3,000 career points and is one of five candidates for Mr. Minnesota Basketball. The winner of this game will face the winner of the contest between No. 10 rated New Ulm Cathedral (20-6) and No. 3 rated Minnesota Valley Lutheran (22-3). The Section 2A Championship will be played Friday, March 15 at MSU-Mankato at 6 p.m. No. 1 rated Minneota and No. 4 rated BOLD were both eliminated in Sub-Section Semifinal games Thursday.
