Principals working under old contracts

Contract negotiations are currently underway between Waterville-Elysian-Morristown School principals and the school district.

Two of WEM’s three principals are working without current, signed employment contracts.

High School Principal John Kaplan’s most up-todate employment contract with the school district was signed on July 20, 2012. The term listed on the contract is 2011 to 2013.

Annastasia Braam, principal of WEM’s Morristown building, is also working under an outdated employment contract that covers 2015 to 2016.

According to WEM School Board’s lead negotiator Thomas Little, Kaplan and Braam formed a bargaining unit last December.

Prior to that, the principals negotiated as individuals.

WEM Elementary Principal Bobbie Jo Bastian, who oversees the elementary portion of the Waterville facility, is the only principal in the district with an up-todate employment contract for 2017 to 2018. This is Bastian’s first year at WEM. She is not part of Kaplan and Braam’s bargaining unit.

According to Gary Lee, Executive Director of the Minnesota School Boards Association, a principal’s most recently approved contract remains in effect until a subsequent contract is ratified or the contract is terminated.

The negotiations process occurs “typically every two years,” according to WEM Superintendent Joel Whitehurst.
