Although popularity has changed over the years, the horseshoe courts put in by the Montgomery Lions Club in the summer of 1985 still continue to see regular care and use. They likely would not have existed if it were not the dedication of one man, Richard or Dick David.
“I started in Kilkenny. I pitched at home at the farm myself. I was interested in horseshoes since in the 1970’s sometime,” said Dick David. Initially, there were no formal courts. David said, “They used to pound the stakes in the grass and put wood chips around the stakes.”
David joined the Montgomery Lions Club in 1984. “They were looking for a project and I suggested that we build some horseshoe courts,” said David. “They sponsored all of it and supplied the manpower. We put wire fence all the way around. I took my tractor up there with a post hole digger on it. I had to laugh though because they were all there digging them by hand, and everyone threw down their post hole diggers.”
Pillsbury/Green Giant donated $869 to aid in the completion of the eight lighted courts. Building the courts is a process, and David even showed a hand-drawn graphic on how to build the courts. He had also come...
