Atherton advances to Class A State Track Meet
WEM freshman Gavin Atherton placed in two events, winning one, at the Class A Section 2 Track and Field Championship held Saturday, June 1 at Mankato West.
Atherton ran in two races and was within four hundreths of a second of advancing to State in both events.
He ended up winning the 400-meter dash in a time of 50.71, which is a personal best. He edged Madelia-Truman senior Ryan Koberoski by one hundreths of a second for the title. GFW junior Justin Messner finished with a time of 50.98 and he along with the other two runners, will also advance to State.
In the 200-meter dash, Ben Dahlin of Jackson County Central won the race in 22.87. Placing second was Messner in 23.26, just ahead of Atherton who finished in 23.30.
The top two individuals and any athlete that exceeds the State qualifying standard advances to State.
The Buccaneers scored 18.5 team points to finish in 15th place among the 24 teams that scored points.Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial/ Nicollet won the boy’s meet with 75 points. They were followed by Windom Area (67), GFW (62.5), Maple River (51), and Sibley East (51).
A handful of other WEM boys competed at Sections and performed very well.
