Atherton and Grohman win Sub-Section titles
Two WEM boys track and field athletes won Section 2A, North Sub-Section Championships Thursday, May 22 at Central Public Schools in Norwood.
Sophomore Griffin Atherton won the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash, and junior Grady Grohman won the shot put.
These two along with junior Talen Taylor and sophomore Wyatt Jans will represent the Buccaneers at the Section 2A Track and Field Championships Saturday, May 31 at Mankato West.
WEM had 11 top-10 finishes Thursday helping them score 50 points and place eighth in the 12-team meet. Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial/Nicollet won the meet with 112 points. They were followed by Le Sueur-Henderson (92), Mankato Loyola/ Cleveland (75), Sibley East (75), Minnesota Valley Lutheran (53), St. Clair/Immanuel Lutheran (52), River Valley (51), WEM, Mayer Lutheran (42), Norwood-Young America (37), Lester Prairie (35), and GFW (28).
Atherton ran the 200-meter dash in 22.35, one of his top times ever. He was clocked in 50.33 in the 400-meter dash. Both times are faster than the State Track and Field Standards. If he would run these times at Sections, he would automatically advance to State.
Grohman tossed the shot put 49-feet, 9-inches, winning this event by nearly six feet. His distance was also better than the State standard. He also placed fifth in the discus with a distance of 129-feet, 11-inches, a personal best. He will compete in both events at Sections.
Jans advanced to Sections in the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200-meter run, setting personal best times in both events. he placed fourth in the 1,600-meter run in 4:49.47 and fourth in the 3,200-meter run in 10:30.83.
