Indians advance in Class C State Baseball Tourney
Solid pitching and some small ball helped the Waterville Indians defeat Morris, 8-1, Saturday, Aug. 17 at Green Isle in the first round of the Class C State Baseball Tournament.
Dallas McBroom pitched six innings, allowing one unearned run. Evan Furst, a draftee from St. Clair, pitched three scoreless innings in relief of McBroom.
Dalton Grose hit a solo home run and the Indians bunched together four straight bunts to score four runs and turn a close game into an easy victory.
Waterville will now have their work cut out for them when they face Region 5C Champion Red Wing Saturday, Aug. 24 at 6:30 p.m. in Belle Plaine.
Red Wing has a solid hitting line up and one of the area’s top pitchers in Aaron Johnson. The lefthander strikes out more than a batter an inning for the Aces, who have advanced to State seven straight seasons.
Red Wing defeated Cannon Falls (11- 1), Stewartville (8-6), and Wanamingo (9- 2) in their Region 5C Playoffs.
Other teams of interest who played last weekend included St. Boni defeated Wanamingo (9-4), Buckman defeated Webster (8-1), Union Hill defeated St. Peter (9-3), Courtland defeated Richmond (10-5), and Le Sueur defeated Madison (10-4).
Jordan will host Cold Spring Friday, Aug. 23 at 7:30 p.m. Union Hill will play Region 9 Champion Clinton at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 at 4 p.m. in Belle Plaine. This game will be played before the Waterville game. Le Sueur will play at Green Isle Sunday, Aug. 25 at 4 p.m. against Region 8 Champion Foley. Region 3 Champion Montgomery will play Sunday, Aug. 25 at 4 p.m. against Waconia.
If Waterville wins they will play the Courtland vs. Isanti winner Saturday, Aug. 31 at 4 p.m. in Green Isle.
