Lady Bucs to play for Sub-Section Championship

The opening two matches in the Section 2AA Volleyball Tournament were easily won by the No. 1 seeded WEM Lady Bucs.

WEM defeated No. 8 seed Blue Earth Area 25-10, 25-9, and 25-11 in the first round Thursday, Oct. 21. Monday, Nov. 1 Minnesota Valley Lutheran was the next team to end their season after the Bucs downed MVL 25-18, 25-21, and 25-14.

WEM will now face NRHEG Thursday, Nov. 4 for the South Sub-Section Championship in New Prague at 6 p.m. A win in this match and WEM would play for the Section 2AA Championship Saturday, Nov. 6 at 8 p.m. in St. Peter. Their opponent would be either Southwest Christian or Belle Plaine.

“I was pleased with our efforts to start the playoffs,” WEM head coach Crystal Lamont said. “The girls came out with a new focus and intensity.”

The win over Blue Earth Area was one which saw the Bucs commit very few errors, control the net play, and record their best hitting night of the season.

The Bucs had only eight hitting errors in 93 attack attempts. Riley Sammon hit .533 with nine kills and only one error in 15 attempts. Claire Bohlen smacked a career- high 12 kills and hit .458 with only one error in 24 attempts. Alex Heuss finished with 10 kills and had only two errors in 28 attempts.

“Riley and Claire took control of the match from the start and had dominating efforts,” Lamont said.
