Reality check Juniors and seniors participate in life-like financial budgeting challenge

Upperclassmen at Waterville-Elysian-Morristown High School walked into a Realty Check, Wednesday morning, Feb. 8.

The event, which mimicked the popular board game, Game of Life, challenged students to juggle theoretical future expenses while maintaining a budget.

“The students each got to pick their careers, which indicated their annual salary, but they didn’t get to pick their other ‘realities’ that were randomly assigned to them,” explained WEM High School Counselor Bridgette Reuvers, who helped organize the event with Kelsey Rose from South Central Services Cooperative (SCSC).

Students opened their personal Realty Check packets at 8:30 a.m. to learn their realities. Some had spouses. Some had a child or multiple children. Others had pets. Many had a combo of pets and kids.

ased on their individual situation and monthly income, students had to decide how to cover their mandatory monthly expenses. These expenses included: childcare, housing, insurance, utilities, phone/internet, transportation, medical and vet bills, furniture, clothing, and groceries.
