Schneid Remarks 10-26-23

I get hundreds of e-mails a day.

The majority of them go right into the trash can.

I don’t think I am unlike others in business, but some of the things I have been sent lately are completely absurd and have absolutely nothing to do with the newspaper business.

Unfortunately, some things I actually do need end up in my spam folder so I spend time going through twice as many worthless e-mails than I should have to because of that.

I am sure others get the same type of stuff. I rant about this every couple of years. So let’s compare…

Starting in my spam Monday afternoon I have received e-mails where I can get a 50GB iCloud Storage for “free,” new benefits as a military veteran, a free gift from Costco, a report on Kate Gosselin living paycheck to paycheck, an urgent message from United Nations Headquarters where I can receive $27 million, a recipe for water pie, final step applications to receive funds, healthy weight loss ideas, numerous government notes, gossip information from In Touch Weekly, $100,000 burial insurance for $1, and a way to cut my grocery bills by 91 percent.

Do any of these sound familiar?

Now I went back to my inbox and these are more realistic but still way too many to even spend time on. Here are some of the messages I sent directly to trash this morning: Irish potato soup recipes, refinancing my student loan is available, treat my skin in five steps, Governor Walz press releases (too many to count), Experian has a cash back card for me, book review opportunity from New York City writer, 2023 roofing cost guide, Facebook birthdays, numerous account verifications from Frontier Yahoo Mail, Visit Las Vegas, Salvation Army to kickoff kettle season with new technology, and of course numerous Taylor Swift references and stories from multiple news sources.

I know I am probably wrong by writing a column due to e-mails, because that would mean I am wasting more time on them than I should.

Oh well! I do, though, appreciate the many readers who do send news tips, photos, story ideas, and other items.

Without these my job gets even tougher. So thank you to those who do send items!

The other 95 percent of those who send e-mails I can do without.
