State Tourney bid stopped by Sleepy Eye-St. Mary’s
Knights edge Lady Bucs in Section 2A Championship
The Sleepy Eye-St. Mary’s girls basketball team was one of the highest scoring teams in Class A this season. They averaged nearly 80 points per game.
WEM held the Knights to 21 first half points in the Section 2A Championship game Friday, March 26 at Arlington, but were unable to score enough themselves in a 64-59 loss.
This was the second meeting between the two teams this season and third in two seasons. SESM won both contests this year, including the Section Championship. They faced Mayer Lutheran in the Class A State Quarterfinals Wednesday, March 31 at Mankato East.
“I thought we played very hard and our defensive effort was fantastic most of the night,” WEM head coach Ty Kaus said. “Offensively we did some good things but just had too many stretches where we struggled to score. We had chances in the first half to really stretch our lead but got stuck for a long period of time. At times we were even a little too unselfish, trying to make the great pass when the better play would have been to take the shot.”
