Concerts in the Park start June 14

The first of a series of musical concerts will be held Thursday, June 14 at Montgomery’s Memorial Park with music starting at 7 p.m. The band Maria and the Coins will be performing. The band bundles danceable, big-picture pop ambition into earnest, honeyed indie sensibility.

“We have this wonderful venue in the park that we don’t use enough. So, I approached Brian Heck, city administrator, and he said this is something he has always wanted to do, and if I could organize it, it could happen,” stated local volunteer Carol Freid.

The Concerts in the Park series will run through August, with concerts being held the second Thursday of the month from 7 p.m. until about 8:30 p.m. The Back Porch String Band will perform Thursday, July 12, and the final concert in the series will feature Paul Imholte on Thursday, August 9.

In the event of rain, the concerts will be moved into the TCU Montgomery Middle School auditorium.

Picnic tables are available at the park, but Freid encourages people to bring their own seating to assure their comfort.

“I don’t think we offer enough for families, and this is a perfect fit to fill that void— it’s a free concert, families are welcome, and you can bring your own food… although I just lined up an ice cream truck for June 14 and I’m working on a few more,” Freid stated.

The summer Concerts in the Park events are sponsored by the City of Montgomery, the  Waseca-LeSueur Regional Library System, the Montgomery Library, and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Freid would like to incorporate local performers into the musical series, having them perform prior to the headliner band from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. on concert evenings. There is also a possibility of hosting a local talent show.

“We’re just getting started!” Freid said with a laugh.
