Montgomery’s spring celebration, Czech May Day returns this year on Sunday, May 1 from 12 to 5 p.m.

The public (Czech and non-Czech) can join free event to celebrate the arrival of spring. However, spring’s weather has moved the event to the Revival on Main.

The afternoon will feature performances by the Sokol Minnesota Children and Teen Czech and Slovak Folk Dancers, as well as the adult group, the St. Paul Czech and Slovak Folk Dancers.

The main event will be raising the traditional May Pole followed by ribbon dances. Because the event will be held indoors, organizer Jean Keogh said they are working on using the pole from last year’s tree and having the ribbon dances around it.

“It will be different but should work,” she said.

Music for the day will be provided by members of the Czech Area Concertina Club with plenty of street space for dancing.

The Miss Czech-Slovak MN Pageant Committee will be on hand with their famous pork, dumplings, and kraut. A Czech bakery, Czech hot dog stand, and a cash bar with Czech beer option provided by the Montgomery Brewing Company will also be available.

The Czech Heritage Club will also have a variety of merchandise, and George Mikiska will be ready to help with genealogy searches for Czech ancestors.

The event also includes face-painting, and other crafts for young and young-at-heart.
