Montgomery’s 2022 Masopust King Austin Testerman will be passing on his title this Sunday when a new king will be crowned during the 2023 Masopust celebration.

The Tri-City United High School senior is proud to have represented the community for the last year—and he had a lot of fun doing it.

“My year has been fun with a lot of new experiences, coming out of my shell, and being able to represent my community,” stated Testerman. “My favorite memory was definitely Kolackys Days. Throwing freezes was a blast.”

When asked why he decided to be a Masopust King candidate, he answered: “The thing that made me want to become King was for me to come out of my shell of being shy and do something outside my comfort zone. Plus, I’m 25% Czech!”

Testerman is the son of Rachel Horejsi, David Testerman, and Ben Danielson. After graduating from high school, he plans to attend South Dakota University and pursue a degree in Biomedical Engineering while maintaining a minor in Music.

Since 2002, the community has selected a Masopust King. The king receives a $500 scholarship from the Montgomery Lions Club for representing Montgomery. Testerman offered these words of advice to the soon-to-be crowned 2023 Masopust King: “It’s gonna be scary, at first, but after the first bump it's a ton of fun and you get to meet a ton of people. Have fun!”

Montgomery’s 23rd Annual Masopust celebration will be held Sunday, Feb. 19 at the Revival on Main, located in the heart of the Historic Downtown district, 213 1st Street South. There will be Czech food, music, dancing, a silent auction and more! Door open at 11:30 a.m. A traditional Masopust skit will be performed at approximately 2 p.m. The new king will be crowned at 3 p.m.
